Immunohistochemical characterization of intraocular metastasis of a canine transmissible venereal tumor

Abstract: Little has been published on intraocular metastasis of transmissible venereal tumors (TVT) in dogs. This report presents a 4-year-old male Labrador Retriever with a previous history of subcutaneous TVT which underwent total remission after treatment with vincristine. The dog presented with clinical signs of uveitis and increased intraocular pressure (IOP) in both eyes. After enucleation of the left eye, a diagnosis of TVT was made based on morphology, histology and immunohistochemistry (IHC). IHC staining for … Show more

“…Vimentin is a marker of mesenchymal cells and is expressed in the TVT (Pereira et al 2000), in the MCT (Jakab et al 2009, Lin et al 2010, in the PCT (Baer et al 1989, Schrenzel et al 1998) and in the LHS (Azakami et al 2006). In this study, the tumours deϐined as TVT by IHC were positive for vimentin in 100% (6/6) of the cases and positive for CD45 in 28.6% (2/7) of the cases.…”

“…It is suggested that natural cutaneous implantation occurs in bites or other wounds (Schlafer & Miller 2007). Speciϐic TVT cell markers have not been described, but immunostaining for vimentin (Pereira et al 2000), lysozyme (Park et al, 2006), CD45 (Gross et al 2006) and CD45RA (Gross et al 2006) associated with histomorphological analysis support the diagnosis of this neoplasm.…”

“…At first, the chosen panel showed compatibility to the results reported in the scientific literature (Pereira et al 2000, Morris et al 2002, Mukaratirwa & Gruys 2003, Araú-jo et al 2012, Mascarenhas et al 2014. In fact, the phenotypic profile presented by the authors to identify the TVT cells can be considered as an auxiliary method in the definitive diagnosis of the tumor.…”

“…From a clinical point of view, TVT cells have been usually characterized through markers such as vimentin, lysozyme, alpha-antitrypsin (Moore & Rosin 1986, Sandusky et al 1987, Mozos et al 1996, Marchal et al 1997, Pereira et al 2000, Morris et al 2002, Mukaratirwa & Gruys, 2003, Araújo et al 2012, Mascarenhas et al 2014. For this reason, these antibodies were firstly considered to characterize TVT primary cultures.…”
