“…As a result of these findings routine Rh (D) typing in Taiwanese hospital patients requiring blood transfusion has been discontinued. 4 However, due to relatively high prevalence of D negative (5e10%) in our population, D typing is a must for blood donors as well as for patients requiring blood transfusion in Indian scenario.…”

“…By comparing the protein compositions of AE1-based complexes in erythrocyte ghosts obtained from Mi.III ϩ and nonMiltenberger (control) people, we found a significant increase of AE1 on Mi.III ϩ membrane. Their higher AE1 level was correlated with functional changes, including superior HCO 3 Ϫ -transporting capacities, acidbase homeostasis, and osmotic resistance, which contrast with the phenotype of certain kinds of hereditary spherocytosis characterized by a marked reduction of AE1 expression. By unveiling the functional relevance of the Miltenberger antigen, our work suggests that its evolutional emergence is beneficial.…”

“…26 Because Mi.III ϩ erythrocytes showed higher HCO 3 Ϫ /Cl Ϫ exchange capacities (Figure 4), we tested whether their differences were reflected in pH i homeostasis. Erythrocytes were loaded with fluorescent pH indicator carboxy SNARF-1, and the elicited pH i responses were quantified by flow cytometry.…”

“…Among Indian population, the frequency is 0.58 % [9]. In Taiwan, 1.2 % among the Paiwan tribe and 1 % among the Rukai tribe were detected as Jk null phenotype [10]. This rare phenotype has also been detected among the ethnic population of the Brazil, and Japan [5].…”
