Immunoglobulins on the Surface of Lymphocytes

Abstract: According to the clonal selection theory, antigen selects out cells genetically precommitted to make antibody directed toward it, and stimulates them to produce antibody of that particular specificity. The simplest mechanism by which this selection might occur would be to postulate the presence of preformed antibody as the recognition unit. This prediction has stimulated several laboratories to investigate the presence of these recognition antibody molecules oll cell surfaces. The first indirect demonstration … Show more

“…However, cell surface IgG also was not demonstrated on thoracic duct cells by surface radioiodination and only trace amounts are present on splenocytes of young Balb/c mice (1). These results appear to contrast with many studies of others in which IgG (e.g., 15) Thoracic duct lymphocytes from germ-free mice were also studied because splenocytes from these axenic mice synthesize an unusually high proportion of IgM relative to total protein but no IgG or IgA (5). Electron micrographs of the spleens of these mice reveal a markedly high proportion of plasma cells, e.g., as many as 24% of splenocytes (5).…”

“…The core of data presented means nothing else than direct experimental evidence for what has been expressed before by many researchers (18)(19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26). To quote Mitchison (27) it has to be assumed "that nothing except antibody recognizes antigen, and we must therefore assume that the receptor for antigen is antibody already present at a site, in or on the cell, prior to exposure to antigen."…”

“…The class of mammalian lymphocytes equivalent to the bursa-derived (B) 1 lymphocytes of birds may be identified by the presence of large amounts of immunoglobulin (Ig) on the surface of most of these cells (1,2). In addition, many of these B lymphocytes, but not thymus-derived (T) lymphocytes, bear a surface receptor for an activated component of C3 allowing them to bind antigen-antibody-complement complexes (3).…”
