Immunoglobulin Class Distribution of Measles Virus Antibodies in Serum and Spinal Fluids of Patients with Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis

Abstract: Sera and cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) from patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) were tested by indirect immunofluorescence for the presence of measles virus specific antibodies of the various heavy chain classes. IgG and IgA antibodies were detected in the CSF while IgG, IgM, IgA, IgD und IgE measles virus antibodies were found in a significant number of the patient sera. Sera from SSPE patients had slightly elevated levels of IgG, IgM, IgD and IgE while IgA was decreased. The heterogeneous h… Show more

“…We presume that the increase in that complement fraction is a response to a prolonged inflammatory process (19). A higher level of serum IgG has already been observed in patients with SSPE (5,20). Increased synthesis of that immunoglobulin indicates its active involvement in the immunological response to measles infection.…”

“…Whether patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) have prolonged measles virus (MV) IgM antibody synthesis is a question that has been Accepted for publication May 21, 1985. investigated by several laboratories. However, a unanimous answer to this question has not been reached, because MV IgM synthesis has been reported in none [Najera et al, 1972;Massaro et al, 19781, in some [Thomson et al, 1975;Mehta et al, 1977;Luster et al, 1978;Ziola et al, 19791, and in all of the SSPE patients studied [Connolly et al, 1971;Chin-Mei and Szu-Chi, 1977;Kiessling et al, 19771. These disparate results could be due to one or more of several factors, including small numbers of patients, low sensitivity of the MV IgM antibody assay used, and not having taken into account possible interference by IgM-class rheumatoid factor (RF) when a MV IgM immunoassay was used.…”

“…Measles-virus-specific IgM antibodies have been repeatedly detected in sera and CSF from patients with SSPE [Arstila et al, 1977;Connolly et al, 1971;Kiessling et al, 1977;Luster et al, 19781. In patients with MS the documentation of the presence of IgM antibodies against measles virus antigens is more diffuse [Haire et al, 1973;Millar et al, 19711.…”
