Immunogenicity of parathyroid allografts in the rat: immunosuppressive dosages effective in passenger leukocyte-rich small bowel transplants are not effective in parathyroid gland transplants with few passenger leukocytes

Abstract: Immunosuppressive dosages effective in passenger leukocyte-rich small bowel transplants were not as effective in parathyroid gland transplants harbouring few passenger leukocytes. In spite of the paucity of passenger leukocytes in parathyroid grafts it is more difficult to control by immunosuppression the immune response to them than that to the passenger leukocyte-rich small bowel.

“…In the current study, ischemic postconditioning reduced myocardial infarct size by 61%. In previous IPOST studies in mice infarct size reduction ranged from 33% to 44% after 3 3 60 sec, 3 3 20 sec and 3 3 10 sec of ischemic postconditioning, respectively (20,30,31). The difference in infarct size reduction might be explained by different durations of coronary artery occlusion and reperfusion, and by different mouse strains used in these studies.…”

“…More than often volatile anesthetics are used to maintain anesthesia for pharmacological or surgical interventions (conf. (24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30)(31)). Isoflurane does not reduce myocardial infarct size when administered 15 min.…”

“…The use of cultured human parathyroid cells is an essential technique for allo-and xeno-transplantation because it provides better engraftment of parathyroid cells by means of better revascularization and a decrease in the expression of the major histocompatibility complex on parathyroid cells (2,19,20). To overcome organ rejection in parathyroid allotransplantation, a number of methods have been proposed, such as short-term immunosuppression and immune-alteration by depletion of passenger leukocytes or preoperative organ culture but unfortunately, those approaches resulted in prolonged but insufficient graft function (21)(22)(23).…”
