Immunoenhancing Effects of Bovine Glycomacropeptide and Its Derivatives on the Proliferative Response and Phagocytic Activities of Human Macrophagelike Cells, U937

Abstract: The immunomodulatory effect of GMP and its derivates on the cell proliferative response of human macrophagelike cell, U937, and its effect on phagocytic activities via incorporation of fluorescence beads were studied. GMP was found to be a potent immunoenhancer at low concentrations, significantly enhancing the proliferation and phagocytic activities of U937. The modulatory function could be radically altered by enzymatic treatments. Pepsin digestion significantly enhanced the degree of cell proliferation and … Show more

“…Thus, in spite of the inability of PES-1 and PES-5 to stimulate Th cells, they may influence immune responses through the activation of monocytes. This finding is in line with previous studies reporting the activation of macrophage function by whey protein hydrolysates (Gattegno, Migliore-Samour, Saffar, & Jolles, 1988;Li & Mine, 2004).…”

“…This peptide inhibits lipopolysaccharide and phytohemagglutinin-induced proliferation of mouse splenocytes and rabbit Peyer's patch cells [15], upregulates the expression of IL-1 receptor antagonist-like component in mouse lymphocytes [16] and suppresses the expression of IL-2 receptor on mouse CD4+ T cells [17]. It enhances the proliferation and the phagocytic activities of the human macrophage cell line U937 [18] and upregulates the secretion of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-1β, and IL-18 in human monocyte THP-1 cells [19]. However, there is no information about the effect of GMP on the activation of mast cells, which are one of the main effector cells in allergy.…”

“…In vitro studies indicate that GMP binds cholera and E. coli enterotoxins and inhibits bacterial and viral adhesions (36), inhibits adhesion of cariogenic bacteria with usage in toothpaste (2), and modulates immune response (27,47). In vivo studies indicate that oral administration of GMP shows substantial anti-inflammatory effects in rat models of colitis and ileitis (29,46), increases zinc absorption in rhesus monkeys (22), and may promote satiety in humans (9,26,30,56).…”
