Immunocytochemical and ultrastructural characterization of endocrine cells in chicken proventriculus

Abstract: The endocrine cells of the chicken proventriculus were investigated immunocytochemically, using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique on paraffin and semithin sections for light microscopy, and immunogold staining in osmium-fixed material for electron microscopy. The fixation procedure also allowed a detailed ultrastructural investigation. Twenty-three antisera were tested and 7 immunoreactive cell-types were identified: D-cells containing somatostatin-like peptide; EG-cells immunoreactive to anti-glucagon, … Show more

“…In the newly hatched chick, a few serotonin-IR cells are evident in the proventriculus [16,25,32]. Such cells are widespread throughout the gastrointestinal tract in adult domestic ducks [4].…”

“…Cells containing glucagon, GLP-1 and GLP-2 have been identified in both the proventriculus and duodenum of the chicken (Martinez et al, 1991;. The alpha cells of the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas and proventriculus produce glucagon from pre-proglucagon by the action of prohormone convertase enzyme.…”

“…The proventriculus of the Houbara bustard is similar to that of other avian species and consists of a superficial layer of columnar cells lining the luminal surface and crypts, a submucosa with several tubular compound glands opening into a central secretory space, a double layer of smooth muscles, and a serosal layer that covers the organ (Martinez et al, 1991). Immunolabeling was absent in all control experiments.…”

“…GRP cells occur in the middle of the submucosal glands of the duck but are dispersed throughout glandular lobules of the finch (Yamada et al, 1985). Other workers (Martinez et al, 1991) found bombesin or GRP-immunoreactive endocrine cells in the inner portions of the submucosal glands of newborn farm chicks.…”
