Immunoblastic sarcoma (histiocytic lymphoma) of the brain with B cell markers

Abstract: A group of central nervous system neoplasms, previously known as reticulum cell sarcoma or microglioma, and recently classified as malignant lymphoma, histiocytic type, not infrequently occur in patients with immunodeficiency, either primary or induced by immunosuppressant drugs. The authors report such a neoplasm in a patient with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura immunosuppressed with azathioprine and prednisone. The neoplasm was studied with several immunological techniques and by electron microscopy. The… Show more

“…In our series the preponderance of lymphoplasmacytoid and immunoblastic lymphomas is in agreement with other reports (Taylor et al 1978, Houthoff et al 1978, Varadachari et al 1978, Jellinger, Slowik & Sluge 1979, Jardon-Jeghers & Reznik 1982, Allegranza et al 1984. Similar incidences have also been demonstrated for a large proportion of the extraneural lymphomas (Lennert 1978, Stein et al 1981.…”

“…It is still a rare malignant tumor of the CNS formerly called perithelial sarcoma [5], reticulum cell sarcoma [6] or mikrogliomatosis [7]. The association to lymphocytes was described by Houthoff et al [8] in 1978, and its predominant B-cell origin was reported by Varadachari et al [9] in 1978. In today's clinical practice we distinguish PCNSL of immunocompetent and of immunodeficient patients.…”
