Immunity to Hymenolepis nana was adoptively transferred to recipient mice of 4 strains using mesenteric lymph node cells (MLNC), spleen cells (SC), and/or serum taken from infected donor mice. Donor cells capable of transferring immunity appeared in the mesenteric lymph nodes and spleen at an early stage (5 days) after infection. Immunity was most effectively transferred with MLNC and immune serum did not enhance this effect. It is suggested that effective immunity to H. nana involves both antibody and T cell-mediated inflammatory events.

“…The effect of X-irradiation on the bile duct cestode H. microstoma has been investigated with regard to the immune response of the mouse host by Tan & Jones (1966. However, despite the interest in the immune reactions induced by cestodes, the only records of a detailed characterization of the immune response to adult cestodes are those of Di Conza (1969) who demonstrates a humoral response to H. nana based on the presence of a 7s y G immunoglobulin and of Friedberg et al (1967) who demonstrate the passive transfer of immunity to H. nana by transference of spleen cells from infected donors. The only record of a humoral response against H. microstoma is that of Hutchins (1961) and the nature of the response has not been characterized.…”

The immune reaction of the mouse to the cestode, Hymenolepis microstoma, has been investigated. The mouse can carry a worm burden of up to 500 mg wet wt and there is no evidence either of rejection of the parasite by the mouse or a slowing down of growth rate of the mouse as a result of the parasite.The nature of the antibody response has been investigated with regard to the type of antibody, onset of production, and titre.The nature of the antibody is discussed together with the fact that there is no rejection of the parasite. The possibility that a cellular immune response might be necessary for rejection is also discussed.I should like to express my thanks to Dr T. S. C. Indeed transfer of immunity to H. nana by spleen cells has been demonstrated by Friedberg, Neas, Faulkner & Friedberg (1967). However, since the cells concerned would include both macrophages and lymphocytes, their work did not demonstrate that the transferred immunity was not mediated by humoral antibody.…”

SUMMARYMice which carried the tapeworm Hymenolepis nana gave anomalous results when they were infected with tubercle bacilli. Males died earlier than females. The cause of death in some was intussusception or acute enteritis. More tapeworm eggs were excreted in the faeces of male mice, and, for each sex, egg counts were higher in BCG-vaccinated animals.This work forms part of the studies on immunity to tuberculosis for a Ph.D. thesis, and was carried out while I was in receipt of a Harrison-Watson Studentship of Clare College and a Welcome Fellowship of the Animal Health Trust.
