“…The microtopographic relation with chronic inflammation corresponds to our observations in ileitis terminalis (Koretz et al, 1987) and non-specific colitis (Degener et al, 1988), and consequently suggests a sequential induction of these antigens in the above-mentioned order, most likely by factors released from the cellular infiltrate. The association of class-I1 antigen induction with ductectasia is in accordance with what we found in obstructive sialadenitis (Moller et al, 1986) and might be interpreted as a consequence of chronic congestion. When this information is applied to the neoplastic state, a breast carcinoma expressing class-I1 products and/or Ii in a subset of its neoplastic population has hence to be regarded as "partially induced" and not as a tumor featuring a "partial loss" or "reduction" of this class of antigens, as had been characterized by Walker (1987, 1988).…”

“…In the course of the disease, ductal cells show changes in the expression of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigens with increased expression of HLA‐A–HLA‐C. In addition, epithelial HLA‐DR expression is significantly enhanced in intercalated ducts, compared to normal controls (15, 16), from which it can be assumed that there is a close relationship between ductal cells and lymphocytes. An exact observation of the morphological changes during the different stages of chronic obstructive sialadenitis revealed an initial increase in lymphocytic infiltration and fibrosis occurring adjacent to ductal cells.…”
