Immune status against diphtheria in healthy adults

Abstract: Outbreaks of diphtheria continue to occur in Kerala with an age shift to older population. Antibody seroprevalence studies are essential to understand the immune status of the community and to develop an effective immunization strategy.Aim:To assess the necessity of diphtheria vaccination among adults.Settings and Design:Cross-sectional study, among 152 healthy adults (>18 years). Methods and Materials:Diphtheria IgG antibody detection was performed by using ELISA technique. Results:Out of 152 study population, … Show more

“…Diphtheria cases continue to be reported in India, with an age shift to an older population. 9 Extensive seroprevalence studies are vital to understand the immune status of the community and develop an effective immunization strategy. [9][10][11][12][13][14][15] However, early diagnosis is a key in treating diphtheria effectively because late presentations are often associated with complications such as myocarditis and neuropathy.…”

“…The incidence of diphtheria has decreased with expanded access to vaccination, but large outbreaks have still occurred within the last 5 years 63 . Infection occurs predominantly in children and young adults, but a demographic shift to older patients has been observed in some regions because of lack of revaccination or waning immunity 64 . Patients typically present with flulike symptoms, cervical lymphadenopathy, and an exudative pharyngitis that can lead to airway obstruction 63 .…”
