Immune responses in mice against herpes simplex virus: mechanisms of protection against facial and ganglionic infections

Abstract: We performed experiments with mice to determine the nature of the immune response(s) that prevents primary infections of the skin and the trigeminal ganglia with herpes simplex virus. Immunization with infectious herpes simplex virus, inactivated virus, or material enriched for viral glycoproteins protected hairless mice against primary facial and ganglionic infections. Live and inactivated vimses induced neutraliing antibodies, whereas glycoprotein material did not. Instead, glycoprotein material induced anti… Show more

“…The immune response to the GP130 glycoprotein complex was quantitated with material from HSV-2 (Curtiss)-infected primary rabbit kidney cells that specifically bound to the lectin from L. culinaris. It has been found that more than 85% of the bound radiolabeled virus-specific polypeptides consist of the GP130 complex (25).…”

“…Immunoprecipitating antibody specific for the three major HSV glycoproteins are readily detected in sera from patients with recurrent herpetic lesions and in sera derived from animals infected with live or inactivated virus preparations (8,9,11,35). However, the relative importance of antibodies directed against individual glycoproteins in protective immunity is uncertain.…”

“…The reason for increased susceptibility of nude mice to HSV is complex . Sev eralstudies have confirmed that nude mice fail to produce neutralizing or immune percipitation antibody in response to HSV infection (1,3,21,25,28). We have now documented for the first time that they also fail to produce anti-HSV ADCC antibody (Table 4).…”
