Immune response to measles vaccine after mass vaccination in Urmia, Islamic Republic of Iran

Abstract: We investigated the effectiveness of the mass measles vaccination campaign in Urmia, Islamic Republic of Iran, by examining the measles IgG seroprevalence and antibody response from paired data before and after the campaign. The overall seropositive rate of 624 subjects aged 5-25 years increased 1 year after the mass vaccination (from 53.0% to 72.3%). A rise in antibody titre occurred in all age groups except the 21-25 years group, which had the highest titre before mass vaccination. On logistic regression ana… Show more

“…An additional dose of measles antigen during the schoolgoing age or later to boost the individual as well as herd immunity against measles can be seen as a possible solution to counteract waning immunity. On the contrary, Yekta et al 23 reported higher seropositivity and higher mean titres of measles antibody in children who received single vaccination as compared to those who were vaccinated twice against measles ( P <0.05). This can be explained by the fact that pre-immunization antibody level is inversely correlated with the response to vaccination i.e., children with low pre-immunization antibody titres show strong response2024.…”

“…However, these levels of immunity for measles were significantly lower than the rates required to achieve 95% coverage or higher, the target required for elimination [11]. A survey in Urmia (northern Iran) showed that measles immunity in the population aged 5 to 25 years increased from 53% before to 72.3% after the 2003 mass vaccination campaign [35]. The present study showed that 81.7% of pregnant women were immune against measles, a figure similar to those in other countries.…”

“…We identified over 220 studies that provided cross‐sectional data and nearly 180 studies that reported on immunity for women of child‐bearing age, primarily for rubella. Table summarizes the over 400 cross‐sectional and women of child‐bearing age measles and rubella serological studies…”
