Immune response in influenza virus infection and modulation of immune injury by viral neuraminidase

Hongyu Jiang,
Zongde Zhang

Abstract: Influenza A viruses cause severe respiratory illnesses in humans and animals. Overreaction of the innate immune response to influenza virus infection results in hypercytokinemia, which is responsible for mortality and morbidity. The influenza A virus surface glycoprotein neuraminidase (NA) plays a vital role in viral attachment, entry, and virion release from infected cells. NA acts as a sialidase, which cleaves sialic acids from cell surface proteins and carbohydrate side chains on nascent virions. Here, we r… Show more

“…Influenza virus (IV) infections or acute viral respiratory infections are highly contagious and can cause pandemics, epidemics, and outbreaks [ 143 ]. The WHO estimates that each year, seasonal influenza virus (seasonal IVs), comprising the H1N1 and H3N2 IAVs and influenza B viruses, cause between 3 and 5 million severe cases and 290,000–650,000 fatalities worldwide [ 144 ].…”

“…Influenza A is characterised by high antigenic variation of HA and NA proteins, which results primarily from the relatively frequent mutations in their RNA. The mechanisms responsible for the antigenic variability of influenza A are the phenomena of antigenic drift or antigenic shift (4) . These changes are mediated by an enzyme responsible for RNA replication (RNA polymerase), and new mutations resulting from RNA polymerase errors may increase virulence, facilitating viral attachment to the respiratory epithelium and its replication.…”

“…The biological activity of a phytocomplex is generally stronger than the sum of the activities of the individual active molecules, and the presence of substances with no specific activity can have a significant synergistic effect [4,5] . Inflammation and associated diseases have been reported to be a great threat to public health, as evidenced by the deadly cytokine storms often observed in influenza and COVID-19 [6][7][8][9] . Pro-inflammatory cytokines are mainly produced by activated macrophages and participate in the positive regulation of inflammatory reactions.…”
