“…19 In mice, Mirasol treatment of platelets can prevent alloimmunization and alter cytokine responses to subsequent transfusion with untreated products. 20 Direct in vitro or animal studies of the immunogenicity of Intercept-treated platelets (Cerus Corporation) have not been published. However, treatment of platelets with 8-methoxypsoralen plus UVA in mice resulted in delayed alloimmunization after repeated platelet transfusion.…”

“…In a rat model, receipt of Mirasol‐treated platelets prevented the rejection of a heart transplant, which was induced in rats that received untreated platelets . “…In this study, both alloantibody formation and priming of secondary cytokine responses were prevented by PRT. The immunomodulatory effect observed was antigen specific and dependent on leukocytes in the transfused unit …”

“…The immunomodulatory effect observed was antigen specific and dependent on leukocytes in the transfused unit. 14 These studies presaged the large animal model findings of Slichter et al 15 that documented reduction of alloimmunization with Mirasol PRT in a trial closely mimicking human platelet transfusion. That group evaluated adding Mirasol pathogen reduction to filter-leukoreduction of donor platelets in a dog model of allogeneic platelet transfusion.…”

“…Multiple in vitro and in vivo studies have documented the efficacy of riboflavin‐UV light pathogen reduction treatment on bacterial, viruses, and other pathogens . Recent studies have demonstrated that UV‐illuminated antigen‐presenting cells are almost incapable of inducing T‐cell activation, with murine studies showing that these treated cells are not capable of inducing a recipient alloantibody response …”
