Immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia : possible association with Ancylostoma caninum infection in three dogs : case report

Abstract: Immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA) may be primary or secondary. In primary IMHA, no underlying cause can be found, whereas secondary IMHA is triggered by an underlying cause, such as neoplasia, infectious diseases, or drugs. “…The cause of Evan's syndrome in this case remains speculative; however, the potential role of intestinal parasites is intriguing. It has been postulated that Ancylostoma caninum infestation may have been associated with the development of IMHA in dogs (Lobetti and Schoeman 2001) and it is not unreasonable to assume that a similar pathophysiological process may have been implicated in the development of Evan's syndrome in this case, particularly in light of the fact that the Parascaris equorum infestation was associated with caseous lymphadenitis of a mesenteric lymph node.…”
