Immune hemolytic anemia following administration of antithymocyte globulin

Abstract: Antithymocyte globulin is commonly used as a therapy for rejection of transplanted organs. Its use can be associated with many side effects. We report a significant hemolytic anemia following therapy with horse-derived antithymocyte globulin. Several commercial Coombs' sera failed to yield a positive Coombs' test with the patient's erythrocytes; however, we were able to detect horse immunoglobulin on the patient's cells as well as on control red cells incubated with this particular preparation of antithymocyte… Show more

“…36,37 The net result is a lasting quantitative and qualitative defect in T-cell function. There have been several reports of various autoimmune disorders precipitated by antithymocyte or antilymphocyte globulin including thyroid disease, 38 Guillain-Barre syndrome, 39 immune hemolysis, 40 and alveolitis. 41 There was a case of a patient who developed asymptomatic factor XII inhibitors after allogeneic HSCT with an ATG-containing regimen for acute myeloid leukemia.…”

“…Although there are no reports of GBS after treatment with ALG for aplastic anaemia, there are reports of other autoimmune disorders after ALG. Autoimmune thyroid disease, although rare, is described most frequently, 9 and autoimmune haemolytic anaemia 10 and fibrosing alveolitis have also been reported. 11 In addition, pre-existing multiple sclerosis and fibrosing alveolitis were exacerbated after ALG, suggesting the potential of ALG to trigger and perpetuate autoimmune disease.…”

“…After the first infusion, his hemoglobin decreased with an increase in serum lactate dehydrogenase. Similarly, Prchal et al 5 reported an 18-year-old girl with endocardial fibroelastosis who underwent cardiac transplantation. She received horse ATG on day + 18, and 3 days later, her hemoglobin decreased with an increase in serum lactate dehydrogenase and the appearance of spherocytes in peripheral blood film.…”

“…The book was found to be acceptable (self-directed, accessible, understandable content, good responsiveness to exercises) and feasible (easy to use, accepted, and commitment therapy-consistent) for individuals with cancer. 5 Huang et al 6 showed that bibliotherapy based on traditional Chinese culture using the WeChat platform can greatly improve the spiritual health of patients with liver cancer and has the potential to be widely applied to cancer patients to improve their well-being. Recently, we have found that the book, "Masnavi" by Maulana Jalal al-Din Rumi (1207-1273) 7 had a significant therapeutic contribution to improving symptoms of anxiety and depression in adolescents.…”
