“…Moreover, Dandona & El Kabir (1970) showed an effect of exophthalmic sera on the weight of guinea-pig Harderian gland, and Fakhri & Hobbs ( 1972) demonstrated antibodies which cooperated with normal lymphocytes in the sera of some patients with ophthalmopathy. Antibodies against guinea-pig Harderian gland extract have been detected using a hemagglutination test (Pisarev et al, 1968). The work showing that TSH subfragments together with an 'abnormal immunoglobulin' bind to eye muscle membranes (Kohn & Winand, 1971;1972;Winand & Kohn, 1975) needs to be confirmed, particularly as this has been proposed by these workers as the mechanism for Graves' ophthalmopathy.…”
