Immune-Enhancing Effect of Sargassum horneri on Cyclophosphamide-Induced Immunosuppression in BALB/c Mice and Primary Cultured Splenocytes

Abstract: Sargassum horneri (SH) is a seaweed that has several features that benefit health. In this study, we investigated the immune-enhancing effect of SH, focusing on the role of spleen-mediated immune functions. Chromatographic analysis of SH identified six types of monosaccharide contents, including mannose, rhamnose glucose, galactose xylose and fucose. SH increased cell proliferation of primary cultured naïve splenocytes treated with or without cyclophosphamide (CPA), an immunosuppression agent. SH also reversed… Show more

“…And the spleen is a crucial immune organ in the body [ 17 ]. The spleen contains a large number of lymphocytes and macrophages and is a key site for T cell activation and B cell differentiation into antibody-producing splenic plasma cells (SPPCs) [ 18 ]. It plays an important role in anti-tumor immunity.…”

“…The administration of A. hookeri leaf extracts improved the levels of impaired hematological factors. In previous studies, the administration of onion skin increased the concentration of MCV, PLT, WBC, LYM, and MONO values in CPA-induced immunosuppressed mice [ 42 ], and Sargassum horneri and Phellinus baumii recovered counts of RBC, WBC, and PLT and the concentration of HGB and LYM in the immunosuppression model [ 43 , 44 ]. Obesity produces impairments in the immune response, such as a higher rate of infection, delay of wound healing, and lower production of antibodies [ 6 ].…”

“…Generally, OF and FL groups showed higher levels than those of other immunosuppressed groups. A. cepa skin and S. horneri improved the proliferation of splenocytes in CPA-induced immunosuppression mice in the presence of LPS and Con A [ 42 , 43 ]. Hydrolyzed and fermented P. grandiflorum extract resulted in an increase of splenocyte proliferation in CPA-induced immunosuppressed mice in the treatment of media only, Con A, and LPS [ 36 ].…”

“…Oxidative stress is believed to be a primary factor in neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in the normal aging process [ 14 ]. Mice injected with d -galactose have been used as an animal model of oxidative stress [ 15 ], and d -galactose-induced rat models have been widely used in aging and other research areas. Elevated levels of d -galactose cause ROS formation and reduce antioxidant enzyme activity in the brain, leading to cognitive dysfunction, brain aging, diminished motor function, and shortened lifespan, mimicking natural aging in rodents [ 16 ].…”
