Immobilization of Bovine Serum Albumin onto Porous Poly(vinylpyrrolidone)-Modified Silicas

Abstract: Grafting with poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) was used to functionalize silica. The functionalized silicas were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, Fourier transform spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The Barrett–Joyner–Halenda analysis confirmed that PVP-modified silica samples have a mesoporous structure. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was immobilized onto the surface of PVP-modified silica systems through physical adsorption. Also i… Show more

“…However, there is less amount of Si element for NPs sample with 0.1 gm PEG than other samples, thus yields indirect evidence for the existence of excessive amount of PEG on the surface of silica nanoparticles, leading to an increase in particle size. A similar observation was made by Timin et al by incorporating PVP in the silica matrix [ 56 ].…”

“…It may be assumed that it was mainly caused by the fairly active interaction of the polymeric shell with the protein components contained in, e.g., cell membranes, and, apparently, with the phospholipid part of these membranes with the outward-facing polar moieties. Fairly strong interaction between polyvinylpyrrolidone and proteins was shown in particular in [368], and also there were indications of the interaction of other water-soluble polymers with molecules in the media of the body [369]. On the other hand, the formation of POM Mo 72 Fe 30 associates with polyvinylpyrrolidone is thermodynamically beneficial [370], as is noted above.…”

“…EDX analyses were performed to confirm the presence of the albumin onto nanofibers. The structure and composition of the albumin immobilized nanofibers were analyzed by detection of elemental concentrations for nitrogen (N) with EDX [31,32]. Also, the distribution of immobilized albumin on the surface was investigated by EDX-mapping of PCL/ P3ANA nanofiber mats (Figure 8).…”
