Immediate Pain Relief in Adhesive Capsulitis by Acupuncture—A Randomized Controlled Double-Blinded Study

Abstract: The efficiency of distal needling acupuncture on immediate pain reduction was demonstrated in patients with AC and confirmed the applicability of press tack needles and press tack placebos for double-blind studies in acupuncture. Subsequent clinical application observation proved that results obtained with press tack needles/press tack placebos can be transferred to classical needle acupuncture. Integrating acupuncture with conservative therapy showed superior effectiveness with respect to the time course of t… Show more

“…Lin et al used a video-based stereophotogrammetry system to compare the ROM of the shoulder after placebo and verum acupuncture [ 28 ]. Schroder et al conducted a double-blind randomized control trial (RCT), using press tack acupuncture needles versus press tack placebo (no needle) to investigate an immediate pain relief [ 21 ]. At the completion of the immediate study, they also asked the participants to take part in a year-long single-blind study comparing acupuncture in addition to conservative therapy versus conservative therapy only (mainly oral steroids) [ 21 ].…”

“…The pattern of treatment was selected by a systematic physical examination for pain sensitive reflex areas (Ashi) immediately beforehand the application of sham or verum plasters 35 . This acupuncture protocol has been successfully approved in a randomized double-blind study on adhesive capsulitis 36 . Following the pre-block laser stimulation at the left radial elbow, several verum or sham plasters were affixed in pain sensitive areas to the contralateral right elbow, the contralateral right knee and the ipsilateral left knee.…”

“…The evaluation of gait parameters was important in the objective evaluation of pain that demonstrated the improvement of parameters through an objective assessment. [19][20][21][22] The spatial parameters (step length and last) and temporal (time step and last) to assess the performance of gait. 23 The study data show a significant improvement in the pace of the steps in the implementation of rapid march, which corroborate the kinematic patterns of the significant increase in stride length and stride, decreased time between steps, although not significantly, and favoring speed throughout the cycle.…”
