Immediate effects of Kinesio Taping on the movement of the hyoid bone and epiglottis during swallowing by stroke patients with dysphagia

Abstract: [Purpose] The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of Kinesio Taping (KT) on the swallowing function of stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-two stroke patients were randomly assigned to two groups; an experimental group which received KT, and a control group which received no taping intervention. Two-dimensional kinematic analysis was used to determine the displacement of the hyoid bone and the angular variation of the epiglottis using human anatomy-based coordinates. The functional dys… Show more

“…The therapeutic resource of the elastic tape has become widely used in speech-language therapy in recent years. This resource is on the agenda of several clinical discussions, in congresses, articles and among other scientific meetings (1,(9)(10)(11)(12) , although its current use is still greatly based on clinical practices (1,3) .…”

“…Even though the clinic is the starting point, there is now a concern in scientific research, in which its effects can be compared and measured (10,12,23,24) . The greatest challenge of this study was how to quantify such changes in a healthy population.…”

“…In addition, Heo and Kim [6] investigated the changes in the hyoid bone elevation and epiglottis angular variation before and after the attachment of Kinesio Tape to the chin and neck, and reported an improvement in the vertical movement of the hyoid bone and rotation angle of the epiglottis, before and after the taping procedure. These methods, however, only induced epiglottis movement and were not direct epiglottis exercise methods.…”

“…10,11 It has also been used successfully in the field of orthopedics, traumatology, and sports. In the past years, new applications have emerged in the field of neurology, [12][13][14] rheumatology, 15,16 and even urogynecology; 17,18 and have shown effects never described before, such as improving sensory feedback, which have yet to be demonstrated by scientific evidence. Likewise, comparative studies have been made between the effects of KT and other taping modalities already in place for many years.…”
