“…However, the role of IEG expression has been extensively studied in the hippocampus, amygdala and cortex (for reviews, see Papa et al ., ; Zhu & Herbert, ; Cammarota et al ., ; Vann et al ., ; Guzowski, ) and it was hypothesised that the transient expression of IEGs after numerous behavioral tasks contributes to the modification of synaptic networks associated with learning and memory, an interpretation largely supported by experiments down‐regulating IEG expression by AS administration (Grimm et al ., ; He et al ., ; Countryman et al ., ; Yasoshima et al ., ; Doron & Rosenblum, ; Katche et al ., ).…”

“…Induction of c-fos and/or zif268 RNA expression by behavioral training has been reported in a number of tasks, including two-way avoidance (Nikolaev et al, 1992), brightness discrimination (Tischmeyer et al, 1990;Grimm et al, 1997), an alternation task (Nagahara and Handa, 1995), and an odor discrimination task (Hess et al, 1995a,b). Additionally, a number of investigators have shown that c-Fos protein expression is increased in the hippocampus by behavioral training (Papa et al, 1995;Zhu et al, 1997;Wan et al, 1999;Cammarota et al, 2000;Vann et al, 2000). Recently, Hall et al (2000) reported increased BDNF gene expression following learning of contextual fear conditioning, and increased zif268 gene expression following retrieval of the same task (Hall et al, 2001).…”

“…The expression of IEGs, including c-Fos in particular, has been shown to be potentially induced in different limbic and cortical regions by exposure to novel stimuli. Furthermore, the degree of familiarity of the stimuli in¯uences the patterns of c-Fos activation into the brain, thus suggesting the existence of an habituation process towards such stimuli (Papa et al, 1993(Papa et al, , 1995Zhu et al, 1995Zhu et al, , 1997Montag-Sallaz et al, 1999).…”
