Imidazolium ionic liquid induced one-step synthesis of 𝜶-Fe2O3 nanorods and nanorod assemblies for lithium-ion battery

Abstract: α - Fe 2 O 3 nanorods and nanorod assemblies are prepared via a facile one-step method with the assistance of imidazolium-based ionic liquid. The aspect ratio of synthesized nanorods is determined by the alkyl chain length of [Cnmim]+. The inter-molecular π−π interaction and intra-molecular dipole-dipole interaction among imidazole rings of [C4mim]+[PhCOO]− play critical roles in both nucleation and assembly processes of α-Fe2O3 nanorods. The α-Fe2O3 nanorod assemblies show an excellent performance in lithium-… Show more

“…The other possibility of IL micelles 67,71,72 templating the formation of such needle-like particles can be clearly ruled out, since it is known that [BMIM][Cl] used in this work contains less than six carbons in the hydrophobic chain and such [BMIM][Cl] molecules containing a hydrophobic chain of less than six carbons are incapable of forming micelles. 73 Also, the time-resolved studies performed in methanol (Figure 10) clearly show that the superstructures are formed in the case of methanol as well as IL and that the IL itself is not responsible for such an assembly.…”
