Imbalance Between Oxidative Stress and Growth Factors in Human High Myopia

Abstract: Myopia is one of the commonest eye pathologies that could affect 2.56 billion people by 2020. Today high myopia is a leading cause of blindness worldwide due to associated ocular illness. Nevertheless, the cellular bases for these diseases to develop are unclear in many areas. We conducted a prospective study of oxidative stress and growth factors in human myopic and non myopic eyes in an attempt to increase our understanding of the underlying physiopathological conditions to adequately early diagnose, prevent… Show more

“…In a recent study, our group evidenced nitrosative stress in the aqueous humor of HM patients. Tyrosine nitration is the only type of post-translational modification to occur in the inflammation and nitrosative stress context [48]. In ARMD, the presence of immunoreactive nitrotyrosine in CFH has been demonstrated, which promotes the secretion of proinflammatory and angiogenic cytokine IL-8 from monocytes stimulated with lipid peroxidation products.…”

“…IL-8 is an important chemokine that activates neutrophil in ltration in the retina. Excessive production of reactive oxygen species is known to disrupt the balance between antioxidant defense and free radical production, which plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many eye diseases [30], including myopia [31].…”

“…High myopia is the leading cause of blindness. Levels of markers of oxidative stress, hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), and nitrite/nitrate ratio were elevated, while the levels of VEGF were reduced in the aqueous humor samples from patients with high myopia undergoing cataract surgery (8). Increased oxidative stress leads to increased inflammatory responses by producing enhanced amounts of NF-kB, a pro-inflammatory cytokine.…”
