Imagining the thinking machine: Technological myths and the rise of artificial intelligence

Abstract: This article discusses the role of technological myths in the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies from 1950s to the early 1970s. It shows how the rise of AI was accompanied by the construction of a powerful cultural myth: the creation of a thinking machine, which would be able to perfectly simulate the cognitive faculties of the human mind. Based on a content analysis of articles on Artificial Intelligence published in two magazines, the Scientific American and the New Scientist, which wer… Show more

“…AI and ML are growing exponentially and can soon become ubiquitous. [ 7 ] Over the past few years, two factors have led to the skyrocketing of AI worldwide, i.e., data availability and a faster processing capacity. [ 8 ] The amount of data being generated is growing exponentially, which can be seen from the fact that 90% of the data globally has been generated over the past 2 years alone.…”

“…The pivotal role of media coverage in public sense-making related to technological innovations and emerging or imagined technologies has been widely acknowledged (Kelly, 2009; Pentzold et al, 2019). Coverage of the social impact of these technologies shapes the public imagination (Natale and Ballatore, 2017; Rössler, 2001), their meaning in public discourse (Cacciatore et al, 2012), and what people hear and believe about them (Cogan, 2005). In a study focusing on information and communication technology (ICT) journalists, Geiß et al (2013) stressed that journalists play a significant part in disseminating, explaining, and interpreting new technologies and fostering social understanding of future trends.…”

“…However, the results of the introduction of AI into human life have not been examined to the fullest extent (Simone & Andrea, 2020;Barry, 2019). AI is found to be capable of helping humans to model systems (Koch & Brockmann, 2019), drive cars (Kamal & Adouane, 2019), treat diseases (Das, Sanyal & Datta, 2019), and teach innovations (Abassi & Boukhris, 2018).…”
