La información local es una especialización periodística que informa de los asuntos más cercanos al ciudadano, algo que cobra especial importancia en un escenario globalizado e hiperconectado. Sin embargo, las tecnologías digitales han contribuido a una proliferación de la desinformación, que amenaza la propia noción de verdad. Por ello, este capítulo reflexiona acerca del proceso de verificación de la noticia de proximidad a partir del concepto de actor-periodista, entendido como el eje en torno al que gira la construcción de una información de calidad.La presente contribución ofrece una revisión de la literatura sobre la verdad informativa y el estudio en red de la estructura social, pero se acompaña también de material cualitativo extraído de conversaciones con periodistas locales en activo. El trabajo periodístico es analizado desde una perspectiva dinámica, que considera la información como un proceso. Las transformaciones en las rutinas productivas motivan el interés por ahondar en el proceso de verificación, que supone tanto el camino que sigue el periodista como los recursos que utiliza para tal fin. Dicha racionalidad guía el uso del capital social como forma de atribuir veracidad a las piezas informativas locales, cuyo funcionamiento e implicaciones explora este texto. Shifting media diets are increasingly viewed as a key driver of political polarization. In particular, prior research has focused on greater choice between partisan outlets and the rise of online news. This paper sheds light on a heretofore understudied yet equally salient development: the decline of local news. We argue that local news exits can induce polarization by increasing exposure to news about national politics, where partisan and ideological differences are more salient than at the local level. To test our argument, we draw on a novel panel data set of the coverage areas of all German news- papers between 1980 and 2009. Using a difference-in-differences design, we demonstrate that local news exits increase electoral polarization. Consistent with our theoretical argument, we also find that local news exits lead to increased consumption of national news, higher degrees of partisan identification, and increased political engagement at the individual level.

Molo.news: Experimentally Developing a Relational Platform for Local Journalism

In this article we present a research project that experimentally develops a local news platform based on empirical research (interviews, group discussions, a survey) and a co-creation approach. What is presented here is not a typical empirical social science research study but the culmination of an entire approach that is oriented toward software development. This article’s aim is to present the project’s conceptual ideas, its interdisciplinary character, its research-based development approach and the concept for a local news platform that grew out of our preliminary work. At each level we focus on the <em>relationality</em> which arises in the figurations of the actors involved and their various perspectives. First, we illustrate how relationality already shaped the objective of our project and how this results in its interdisciplinary structure and research design. We then discuss this idea with reference to our empirical findings, that is, the paradox of the local public sphere: While all the actors we interviewed—those who (professionally) produce content and those who use it—have a high appreciation for the idea of a local public sphere, the mediated connection to this sphere is diminishing at the same time. We understand this as the real challenge for local journalism and the local public sphere at large, and not just for individual media organizations. This is also the reason why we argue for a fundamentally relational approach: from a theoretical point of view, it can be used to grasp the crisis of the local public; from a practical point of view, relationality represents the core characteristic of the platform in development. On this basis, we will then show how the concept of the experimental local news platform evolved through the use of a prototype as a relational boundary object. This development lead to the conceptualization of the platform <em>molo.news</em> which itself is characterized by a fourfold relationality. Our concluding argument is that approaching relationality in a more rigorous way could be the key to exploring the future of local journalism.
