Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate the structural changes in the trabecular bone of the mandibular condyles in patients treated with the Twin‐block functional orthopaedic appliance that act by promoting condylar growth and to compare the fractal dimension (FD) of condylar trabecular bone structure prior to treatment (T0) and after orthopaedic functional treatment (T1). Setting and sample population: This retrospective study included panoramic images of 112 individuals with a mean age of 11.04 ± 1.30 years in the study group (32 girls and 24 boys) and 11.6 ± .80 years in the control group (29 girls and 27 boys). Materials and Methods The standardized region of interest was selected as the right and left condylar areas close to the articulation surfaces from the twin‐block (TB) group, which included patients who completed functional orthopaedic treatment and the control group, which included untreated individuals. FD values in the condylar region were analysed from the panoramic radiographs of both groups using a box‐counting method with ImageJ software (version 1.52a, US National Institutes of Health). Results There was a significant decrease in the FD values of the right (−.038) and left (−.022) condylar region at T0 and T1 in the TB group. Between‐group FD comparisons demonstrated that the TB group showed changes in the condylar region (right, P = .004; left, P = .022) compared to the control group. Conclusion Functional orthopaedic forces caused a decrease in the trabecular structure of the condylar area examined.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate periapical radiographs of enamel caries, dentin caries, and deep caries with exposed pulp and intact teeth obtained in vitro using photo-stimulated phosphor plates (PSP) under different exposure parameters. Methods: 3 non-carious extracted molars were selected. The obtained molars were embedded in the wax created from pink wax by ensuring approximal contact and a base was created. 14 different imaging protocols were used with 60 kVp, 4 mA 0.02-0.1 second and 70 kVp 7 mA, 0.25-1.25 second exposure parameters. Intact teeth were imaged with these various imaging protocols. Artificial cavities were then created for enamel caries, dentin caries and deep caries with exposed pulp and imaged according to the same protocols. The images were evaluated by 3 clinicians who were blind to the exposure protocol and caries status. Inter-observer agreement with actual situations was examined with Kappa statistics. Results: In the low-dose group, the kappa values of observer 1, observer 2, and observer 3 were 0.905, 0.952, 0.952, respectively. The kappa values of observer 1, observer 2, and observer 3 in the ultralow-dose group were 0.833, 1, 1, and the kappa values of observer 1, observer 2, and observer 3 in the high-dose group were 1, 1, 0.833, respectively. The results obtained in all groups showed a statistically significant-excellent agreement (p<0.001). Conclusion: Approximal caries can be diagnosed with intraoral radiography obtained with low radiation doses with PSP in dentistry. Thus, patients could be exposed to less ionizing radiation.

Evaluation of the Fractal Dimension in the Apical Region of Primary Teeth with Unilateral and Bilateral Infraocclusion

Objectives: This study aims to employ fractal analysis (FA) to determine potential variations in the mandibular trabecular bone structure in the apical region among individuals with unilateral and bilateral infraocclusion of primary teeth compared to a control group. Materials and Methods: Forty-three carious primary teeth identified from panoramic radiographs taken for diagnostic purposes between January 2018 and December 2023 in the Department of Oral, Dental, and Maxillofacial Radiology of our institution were included in this investigation. Categorical variables were analyzed using the chi-square test, while continuous variables were assessed through Student paired t-tests and ANOVA tests. The threshold for statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: The analysis revealed that the mean fractal dimension (FD) did not significantly differ between unilateral and bilateral infraocclusion groups based on gender (p > 0.05). Although the FDs in the apical regions of unilaterally infraoccluded teeth and their contralateral counterparts were observed to be lower, the disparity based on occlusion position did not reach statistical significance (p: 0.11). Moreover, no significant distinctions were observed in the FD or resorption levels between teeth exhibiting bilateral infraocclusion on the right and left sides (p: 0.877, p: 0.938). It was noted that the presence of an opposing tooth positively influenced the FD; however, this effect did not achieve statistical significance. Conclusions: While infraocclusion is prevalent in mandibular primary molars, this study did not observe any discernible alterations in the mandibular trabecular bone structure attributable to infraocclusion. Unilateral infraocclusion, in particular, was found to be a common and relatively benign condition. Additionally, numerical anomalies such as hypodontia and supernumerary teeth might exhibit associations with infraocclusion.
