Imaging Review of Snowboard Injuries

Abstract: Snowboarding and skiing remain the two most popular winter sports worldwide. Musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries are common in snowboarding, and the number has increased significantly since the advent of snow parks. The number of injuries is the highest for novice snowboarders; more experienced boarders generally sustain more severe injuries. Snowboarders can experience a wide array of MSK injuries, but some injury types are more frequently encountered because of the specific injury mechanism unique to snowboarding… Show more

“…A snowboard fracture is a more specific sport-related fracture of the lateral process of the ankle due to dorsiflexion and inversion of the ankle, which typically occurs in snowboarding but may be seen in other winter sports ( 36 ). Clinically, there is soft tissue swelling distal to the lateral malleolus and it may mimic lateral ankle sprain.…”

“…Among adults, the wrist is the most frequent location of injury while snowboarding, making up 15 to 28% of all injuries. The aforementioned is followed by injuries to the soft tissue of the shoulder, sprained ankles, contusions on the legs, damage to the medial collateral ligament (MCL) of the knee, fractures of the clavicle, lacerations on the upper body, concussions, fractured ankles, and damage to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of the knee [5]. Head injuries, while less common than other skiing and snowboarding injuries, are the primary cause of mortality and disability in winter sports [6].…”
