Imaging of Tumors of the Trachea and Central Bronchi

Abstract: Tumors of the trachea and central bronchi can be benign or malignant. Clinical presentation may be confusing, particularly in benign tumors that can be misdiagnosed as asthma or chronic bronchitis. Chest radiography has many limitations and is often considered unremarkable in patients with tumors of the central airways; therefore, multidetector CT (MDCT) has become the most useful noninvasive method for diagnosing and assessing the central airways. The purpose of this article is to provide a review of imaging … Show more

“…They emphasize that VB allows non-invazive and fairly accurate assessment of the 3D tracheobronchial tree. Ferretti et al (22) indicate that tumors of the trachea and central bronchi can be benign and malignant as clinical picture, especially in benign tumors the picture can be confusing and they can be diagnosed as asthma or chronic bronchitis. They state that the radiography of the thorax has many limitations and often is not representative in patients with tumors of the central airways.…”

“…Direct mediastinal extension of tumour is not uncommon (Figure 12). Approximately 10% of lesions are multifocal, which necessitates careful evaluation of the remainder of the airway when SCC is suspected [29].…”

“…MDCT plays a key role in depicting tumors of the tracheobronchial tree [3][4][5] and in assessing their extent within the lumen, airway wall, and surrounding structures before treatment planning. Airway lesions Ͼ5 mm are usually detected on CT because of the natural contrast between luminal air and soft-tissue attenuation of the lesions.…”
