Imaging of Solid Kidney Tumours in Children

Abstract: Eighteen children aged 6 months to 12 years with 20 solid renal tumours; 13 Wilms' tumours (WT), 2 clear cell sarcomas of the kidney, I malignant rhabdoid tumour of the kidney and 2 cases of bilateral nephroblastomatosis with Wilms' tumour underwent evaluation with US, CT and MR imaging. Contrast-enhanced CT and non-enhanced MR were equal1y accurate in determining the size and origin of the tumour but were unreliable in separation of stages I, II and III. US could only accurately assess the size of the tumours… Show more

“…The finding of nephroblastomatosis at histopathologic examination of the surgical specimen should indicate a radiologic follow up in order to reveal malignant transposition. Contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging might be most useful for separation of WT from nephroblastomatosis (12). One child had nephroblastomatosis, but as contrast enhanced computed tomography is not always performed, the frequency may be higher.…”

“…3 Following the SIOP 4 recommendations, neoadjuvant chemotherapy is administered without any cyto-or histopathological documentation if the clinical and radiological presentations are typical. 1,3 However, some nephroblastomas may also be revealed by an intrarenal mass associated with fever and biological inflammatory signs, and may be difficult to differentiate from a renal abscess. In these circumstances, FNA is indicated.…”
