Imaging of malignant pleural mesothelioma: it is possible a screening or early diagnosis program?—a systematic review about the use of screening programs in a population of asbestos exposed workers

Abstract: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) in an uncommon neoplasia with high mortality rate, mostly related to professional asbestos exposure. Clinical manifestations are not specific so that diagnosis is performed at advanced stage and screening protocols are not feasible now. On the other hand, asbestosexposed workers have a high incidence of developing lung cancer. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is a volumetric acquisition technique with high spatial resolution and a low dose exposure; it is used in many tr… Show more

“…Its median survival rate is around 12 months. Recent studies reported that, the incidence of disease has increased [1][2][3][4][5]. MPM is generally detected in advanced stages after the long latency period.…”

“…Interestingly, this appearance on ultrasonography was similar to that of human mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis, where the hydrocele showed a good contrast against the small nodules attached to the surface of the tunica vaginalis (11). In contrast-enhanced volumetric CT, which is one of the gold standard examinations for mesothelioma in humans, the characteristic findings for malignant pleural diseases including mesothelioma were mainly parietal and nodular pleural thickening (12). In one report of canine thoracic mesothelioma, a characteristic CT finding of parietal subpleural thickening was described (6).…”

“…21,22 Computerized tomography, however, has not proven to be useful for mesothelioma screening in high-risk asbestos-exposed populations. 23 Volumetric analysis as well as other linear approaches for estimating the bulk of disease demonstrated correlations with the prognosis of patients with the disease. 24 Metabolic imaging with 18 F-labeled fluorodeoxyglucosepositron emission tomography-CT is also crucial in defining the extent of disease, especially in individuals who are being considered for resection.…”
