Imaging features in incident radiographic patellofemoral osteoarthritis: the Beijing Shunyi osteoarthritis (BJS) study

Abstract: Background The present study aims to describe the imaging features in incident radiographic patellofemoral osteoarthritis (RPFOA) population in a Chinese suburban area. Methods The Beijing Shunyi osteoarthritis (BJS) study was a population-based, longitudinal and prospective study. Residents were recruited by randomized cluster sampling in 2014 and were followed 3 years later. “…Grading of patellofemoral osteoarthritis is traditionally described on the lateral radiograph. There is greater interest in interpreting the significance of degenerative findings on radiograph in recent times with the emergence of different joint-preserving therapeutic modalities (17). When the floor of the trochlear groove rises above the top wall of one of the femoral condyles on the lateral radiograph, this is known as a 'crossing sign' and signifies a J o u r n a l P r e -p r o o f flat trochlea (18).…”

“…Magnetic resonance imaging examination is performed to evaluate the extent of cartilage wear in the patella and femoral trochlea, as well as the extent of bone edema in subchondral bone. 2,3 The patient is placed in the supine position. The anteromedial, anterolateral, and supralateral patellar portals are established routinely and are used alternately as observation and operation portals.…”
