Imaging Diagnosis—metastatic Hemangiosarcoma Causing Cerebral Hemorrhage in a Dog

Abstract: A 9-year-old male Appenzeller mountain dog had progressive severe ataxia and central vestibular syndrome that was localized clinically to the brain stem. The cerebrospinal fluid characteristics were suggestive of hemorrhage into the subarachnoid space. On computed tomography (CT), hyperattenuating masses were found in the left lateral ventricle extending into the cerebrum, and another involving the cerebellum and brainstem. The hyperattenuation of the masses in noncontrast images and the absence of contrast en… Show more

“…MRI is more sensitive than CT for detecting oedema and lacunar infarction, and can detect changes within 1 h of onset. 12,13 In previous reports, dogs with CVA tended to be geriatric, 4,8,10,14,15 and small and spaniel breeds are predisposed to cerebellar infarction. 8,10 Cerebellar infarction is usually ischaemic in nature 4,10 and often involves the territory of the rostral cerebellar artery.…”

“…Grossly and histologically, the nodules analyzed here have the same features aspreviously reported elsewhere (Tucker et al, 2000;Gabor et al, 2006;Hidaka et al, 2006;Dennler et al, 2007). When HSA is suspected, immunohistochemistry for von Willebrand's factor (factor VIII-related antigen) or CD31 can be used to demonstrate endothelial derivation and support the diagnosis.…”

“…T1W iso-to hyperintense and T2W hypointense signal, which is accentuated to signal voids in T2*W are consistent with early subacute hemorrhage (Thomas et al 1997). This is an unspecific finding and was described with metastatic hemangiosarcoma (Dennler et al 2007), hemangioma (Eichelberger et al 2011) and intratumoral hemorrhage in choroid plexus tumors in dogs (Wisner et al 2011). With a mixed signal intensity in T1W and T2W and a signal void (T2*) hemangiosarcomas appear in dogs.…”
