Imaging charge exchange recombination spectroscopy on the TEXTOR tokamak

Abstract: We describe the application of a simple spatial-heterodyne coherence-imaging filter for 2D Doppler imaging of charge exchange recombination (CXR) emission from a heating beam in the TEXTOR tokamak. Results obtained by the CXR imaging system are found to be consistent with measurements obtained using a standard multi-channel spectrometer-based system. We describe the system, indicate possible enhancements and future applications for imaging CXRS.

“…Following Doppler CIS instruments used on other devices, 2,6 the MAST instrument uses a static polarisationbased interferometer, in which orthogonal polarisation states act as the two interferometer beams and share a common physical beam path. This makes the system compact, easy to align, and relatively robust to mechanical disturbance.…”

“…5 Note that due to this line shape sensitivity, the contrast varies with ion temperature for Doppler broadened lines and can be used as a T i diagnostic. 3,6,8 However, this complicates the interpretation of the fringe phase images, thus to optimise for flow measurements we choose a delay where the contrast is relatively insensitive to T i . Based on modelling of ζ for the measured multiplet line structures, a delay plate thickness of L = 6.5 mm was chosen as a good compromise between maximising ζ , maximising the phase sensitivity to flows, and minimising T i sensitivity for all three spectral lines.…”

“…This is much higher than the time resolution of Doppler CIS systems viewing SOL on other conventional tokamaks. 24,29,39 This feature allows for timeresolved 2D measurements in short-time phenomena on the HL-2A tokamak, such as ELMs.…”

“…12 CIS techniques have been applied on various magnetic confinement devices, including linear device, 18 dipole device, 19 stellarators, [20][21][22] and tokamaks. [23][24][25][26][27][28][29] Doppler CIS measurements on the MAST tokamak show that counter-streaming flows of impurities 28 due to gas puffing increase the pressure on field lines. These results are reproduced by EMC3-EIRENE simulations.…”

“…Doppler "coherence imaging" systems are deployed on many devices around the world. In particular, these systems have revealed the structure of impurity ion flows in the divertor and scrapeoff-layer (SOL) regions of the DIII-D and MAST tokamaks [4,5] and been deployed for charge exchange recombination spectroscopy on the TEXTOR tokamak [6]. We discuss the optical principles and instrumental details in section 2 and present new results of synchronous Doppler imaging of instabilities on a linear magnetized plasma with flow velocity resolution ∼ 1 m/s in section 3.…”
