IMAGINE Network’s Mind And Gut Interactions Cohort (MAGIC) Study: a protocol for a prospective observational multicentre cohort study in inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome

Abstract: IntroductionGut microbiome and diet may be important in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and comorbid psychiatric conditions, but the mechanisms are unclear. We will create a large cohort of patients with IBS, IBD and healthy controls, and follow them over time, collecting dietary and mental health information and biological samples, to assess their gastrointestinal (GI) and psychological symptoms in association with their diet, gut microbiome and metabolome. Methods and analysis… Show more

“…We recruited PRPs (n=2), clinicians (n=2) and researchers (n=2) across Canada for each group. We identified participants through national network platforms (eg, Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research, I nflammation, M icrobiome, and A limentation: G astro- I ntestinal and N europsychiatric E ffects (SPOR IMAGINE) Network),28 and study team contacts using maximum variation purposive sampling to recruit PRPs, and convenience sampling to recruit researchers and clinicians. PRPs and researchers were eligible to participate if they had basic knowledge and skills to conduct qualitative research acquired either through patient-oriented-research (POR) training, education or participating in healthcare research.…”

“…During the searching process for this review, three study protocols were identified that targeted all three themes together [ 130 ], with one adding structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the human brain [ 131 ] and another creating a massive prospective cohort of people with IBS, inflammatory bowel disease, and healthy individuals combing genetic, microbiome, and metabolomic profiles [ 132 ]. All these scientific advancements are promising, potentially introducing a new era of “microbiome literacy” from “food literacy”.…”

“…We recruited participants from the SPOR IMAGINE (Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research, Inflammation, Microbiome, and Alimentation: Gastro-Intestinal and Neuropsychiatric Effects) Network, 21 , 22 the Alberta Health Services Digestive Health Strategic Clinical Network, 23 and through professional contacts of the research team. Both these networks have trained PRPs, providing us opportunities to engage with patients immediately on the short-term project.…”
