People who challenge the status quo through collective action face tremendous obstacles-not just practically, but in their ways of thinking, existing, and relating to others. This article addresses how collective actors sustain their engagement in the face of such high costs. System-challenging collective actors must reimagine and enact new, non-normative ways of thinking, existing, and relating that transform the status quo. This article explores the social psychological processes underlying sustained system-challenging collective action through activists' narratives of politicization, experiences of identity change, and reimagination of social structures. We draw on contributions from social psychological theories of system justification and social identity to examine how system-challenging collective action is motivated and sustained. Through interviews with Chicago-based activists and organizers engaged in system-challenging collective action, we implement a qualitative thematic analysis to propose that sustainability arises from three integrated factors: shared identity, system-challenging ideology, and intentional community.

The ability of individuals and groups to identify, assess, and pursue alternative possible futures is an essential component of their ability to deliberately and collectively respond to major sustainability challenges rather than experience unguided or forced change. Deliberately engaging in transformation processes inevitably requires imagination. We refer to imagination for transformations as interdependent cognitive and social processes that create representations of present and possible future states of the world that can inform public deliberation, policy, decision making, and behavior from the individual to the global scale. We contend that imagination is an essential capacity for securing ecological, social, economic, and cultural well-being in times of rapid and often unpredictable global change. We sketch an emerging interdisciplinary research agenda on imagination as a transformational capacity and its role in transformation processes, building on contributions to a special issue on this subject. We specifically focus on imagination in relationship to transformative agency, causation, and individual-collective dynamics. Our aim is to identify research questions and challenges that are most pressing with a view to supporting efforts of transformations toward sustainability.

A pesquisa foi feita com crianças escolares das zonas urbana e rural. O objetivo foi analisar os significados produzidos por elas acerca das desigualdades sociais mediadas pelo filme “O Menino e o Mundo”, a partir da Psicologia Histórico-Cultural. Através das transcrições e dos mapas de significados, percebeu-se que o modo como os significados são construídos e expressos pelas crianças está relacionado aos cenários socioeducacionais em que elas estão inseridas, especialmente sobre situações de opressão e de vulnerabilidade. O cinema facilita esse processo de mediação de sentidos, e os processos criadores devem ser explorados nas escolas, como um meio de superação das disparidades sociais.
