Image quality evaluation of eight complementary metal-oxide semiconductor intraoral digital X-ray sensors

Abstract: None of the sensors was considered to generate images of significantly better quality than the other sensors tested. Further research should be directed towards determining the clinical significance of the differences in image quality reported in this study.

“…Vandenberghe and Jacobs performed a study on human cadaver skulls to investigate the possible effect of tube voltages on accuracy and subjective image quality in periodontal defects using PSP systems using 80, 120 and 160 msec exposure times. There were no statistically significant differences between measurements with different tube voltages and exposure times; besides subjective image quality in detecting lamina dura delineation, trabecular structure depiction, contrast perception and furcation involvement visibility did not differ among observers for varying exposure parameters 13 .…”

“… 16 Furthermore, digital X-ray detector plates provide an excellent spatial resolution perfectly suited for the examination of oral and maxillofacial structures. 17 Another advantage of digital X-ray systems is the almost immediate availability of images. This is especially useful under the above-discussed conditions, where it is often necessary to repeat a shot.…”
