Image Guided Reconstruction of Un-sampled Data: A Filling Technique for Cultural Heritage Models

Abstract: Cultural Heritage (CH) is one of the major fields of application of 3D scanning technologies. In this context, one of the main limitations perceived by the practitioners is the uncompleteness of the sampling. Whenever we scan a complex artifact, the produced sampling usually presents a large number of unsampled regions. Many algorithmic solutions exist to close those gaps (from specific hole-filling algorithms to the drastic solution of using water-tight reconstruction methods). Unfortunately, adding patches o… Show more

“…All of these are caused by the presence of the pseudo hole and the resistance to the research work, which highlights the necessity and importance of the triangle network model to detect and fill the pseudo hole. Dellepiane et al (2011) did a number of research works about filling and repairing the pseudo hole. They proposed a filling method of adopting triangular patch to repair pseudo hole.…”

“…The early studies were essentially based on stereomicroscope examinations, and for a long time images were recorded using photography [Skaug 1994;]. These 2D approaches could be considered out of date as many 3D imaging techniques are now considered established in the field of cultural heritage and conservation [Arbace et al 2013;Patay-Horváth 2013;Neiß 2013;Alfed 2013;Zhang et al 2012;Dellepiane et al 2011;Sansoni et al 2009;Van Den Berg 2008;Poggi et al 2005].…”
