Image Analysis of 3D Conjunctival Melanoma Cell Cultures Following Electrochemotherapy

Abstract: Three-dimensional (3D) cell cultures represent small avascular tumors in vitro and simulate some of the biological characteristics of solid tumors, enhancing the evaluation of anticancer drug efficacy. Automated image analysis can be used for the assessment of tumor growth and documentation of changes in the size parameters of 3D tumor spheroids following anticancer treatments such as electrochemotherapy. The objective of this article is to assess the effect of various electroporation (EP) conditions (500–750 … Show more

“…Peripherally located cells detach from the main spheroid body. ECT treatment changes the spheroid shape, alters the inner area core with necrotic cells, and the outer area consists of proliferative cells [ 116 , 117 ]. Bleomycin combined with electroporation reduced the viability of conjunctival cell lines (CRMM1, CRMM2).…”

“…The authors used the human conjunctival melanoma cell lines CRMM1 and CRMM2 to form spheroids, in which they analyzed the cytotoxic effect of electrochemotherapy and other chemical treatments, such as 5-fluorouracil, mitomycin C, or bleomycin. Afterward, they published an automated image analysis method that can be used for the assessment of tumor growth and changes in the size of 3D tumor organoids following anticancer treatments [ 166 ].…”
