Abstract: A survey of the mechanisms of word-formation in the English vocabulary of mechanical engineering. Though restricted to this specific technical field, it is an illustration of the main processes by which the English language at large extends its vocabulary : - semantic neology (synecdoche and metaphor) - morphological neology (derivation by means of prefixes or suffixes) - syntagmatic neology (compounds and syntactic groups).
