The first part of the article provides an overview of the theoretical evidence, the main provisions, and the implementation strategy of information support for bioresource and ecosystem research in the north-west Pacific, which has been conducted over the past 20 years in the Russian Far East Research Institute TINRO-Center. In short, the concept consists of a combination of the following four assertions: 1) For the steady and sustainable development of the Russian Far East, the entire Russian Federation and the Asia-Pacific Region in general, environmental, food, economic, and other security is required, which cannot be achieved without the rational use of bioresources based on the ecosystem approach to the management of aquatic bioresources. 2) For the inventory, appraisal, monitoring, forecasting of the state of and management the natural water resources when applying this approach, statistically relevant quantitative information is required on the greatest possible number of constituents of marine biocenosis of the northwestern Pacific for the longest possible period of time, which is only available at the TINRO-Center. 3) This valuable data should be organized into databases, based on which geo-information and other electronic information systems are prepared, and based on these map atlases and reference books on natural water resources, using automated workplaces created especially for this. 4) The resulting unique information support will be of great value not only for practical purposes, but also for science, both applied and fundamental. Next comes a summary of the many years of work on the practical implementation of this concept and the key achievements in this field obtained by the TINRO-Center by the end of 2015 are reviewed. At the end, some plans for the near future are outlined.

The new large database (DB) is considered: the history of its development, sources and the volume of the information contained therein, the first experience of operating it and its prospects; the advantages and disadvantages of this DB are discussed; its role in applied (bioresource) and fundamental researches is highlighted; the DB role in the context of the Concept of information support of the fisheries researches of the Far Eastern seas of Russia and the Comprehensive program of environmental safety of Russia is pointed out, as well as the necessity to continue works on its regular updating and filling with the up-to-date data.

Species structure of pelagic ichthyocenes in Russian waters of Far Eastern seas and the Pacific Ocean in 1980–2009

Based on the results of pelagic trawl catches in 1980-2009 a general list of ichthyofauna in Russian waters of the Far Eastern seas and the Pacific Ocean comprise 450 species, among which 114 species are iden tified in the Sea of Japan, 258 species in the Sea of Okhotsk, 170 species in the Bering Sea, and 319 species in the Russian waters of the Pacific Ocean. The species composition of the ichthyofauna was classified according to taxonomical, biotopical, and zoogeographical status of the species. The Simson' index of dom inance varies in a narrow range from 1.58 to 2.66, and the Pielou's evenness index has low values: 0.17 (Sea of Japan and Sea of Okhotsk), 0.19 (Russian waters of the Pacific Ocean), and 0.27 (Bering Sea). Values of the indexes are confirmed by the conclusion about the dominance of one or two to three species in the sur veyed ichthyocenoses made according to the analysis of profiles of rank curves. The highest species diversity (Margalef's index) is observed in Russian waters of the Pacific Ocean and the lowest diversity is in the Sea of Japan. When comparing qualitative and quantitative composition of ichthyofauna in respect to regions, the lowest index of diversity is found for the fauna in the Sea of Japan. The dynamics of biomass (tons/km 2 ) of all components of pelagic ichthyocenoses is observed according to the periods of years and their species structure is determined. The average long term density of pelagic fauna concentrations in the area under survey con stitute 16.8 tons/km 2 and its total resources are 70-80 million tons.
