Illness Understanding of Oncology Patients in a Community-Based Cancer Institute

Abstract: Our findings confirm that more than one quarter of patients with advanced cancer have poor illness understanding and highlight that an even greater number of patients with early stage I to III cancer have poor illness understanding. These observations highlight the need to improve illness understanding for patients across the entire cancer continuum.

“…The lack of adequate factual knowledge about breast cancer as found in this study has consequences for patients' illness perception and treatment outcomes. [24][25][26] This is because perceptions of the causes of breast cancer could influence patients' ability to adhere to medical treatments as erroneous beliefs may lead to seeking alternative healthcare from unapproved sources. 27 In terms of patients' perception of the curability and duration of their illness, we found that the majority of the Open access participants believed that their illness can be completely cured; and that they believe they can live long with their illness as long as they have faith in God and adhere to medical treatments.…”

“…Given the potential multiple sources of life expectancy information, greater clarity about the extent to which each of these different sources holds accurate and consistent perceptions of a patient's life expectancy is required. Inconsistent illness understanding can lead to disagreements about management strategies, which may culminate in conflict and suboptimal care (Freedman, Kouri, West, Lii, & Keating, ; Sivendran et al, ).…”
