Illegal downloading of pop music among university students in Taiwan: An agent‐based model simulation

Abstract: The lifestyle and consumption patterns of the current mobile generation (m‐generation), born after the Internet gained popularity, have changed dramatically. This study investigated university students' consumption attitude toward pop music and their behavior of illegally downloading such music by considering different law enforcement environments. In the first stage of our study, we designed and administered a questionnaire survey and collected 424 responses. The valid sample size was 394. On the basis of the… Show more

“…Such findings provide strong arguments that deterrence mechanisms can be a powerful tool in decreasing the extent of digital piracy (Chiu et al, 2008). Hence, consumers will show greater adaptive behavior when they perceive that threats of engaging in digital piracy are severe (Lowry et al, 2017) and that they are vulnerable to this threat (the likelihood of being punished) (Akbulut, 2014; Liao et al, 2010; Pai & Chie, 2017; Yoo et al, 2014). Hence we hypothesize:Hypothesis The higher the threat appraisal, the higher the consumer's intention to engage in adaptive behavior.…”

“…Since consumers behave differently online, we need to understand how different groups perform. For example, gender and age can be a determinant in consumer attitudes toward digital piracy (Tjiptono, Arli, & Viviea, 2016) as young Taiwanese students are open to illegal downloading of pop music because they believe they will not get caught (Pai & Chie, 2017). As a result, different groups have different levels of sensitivity to share personal data (Milne, Pettinico, Hajjat, & Markos, 2017) and based on consumer segments in social commerce, researchers have been able to classify them into social patrons, wary explorers, and sporadic explorers (Nadeem, Juntunen, & Juntunen, 2017).…”
