Abstract

This study aimed to reveal if the implementation principles of the primary school second grade English language teaching curriculum, carried out since the academic year of 2013-2014, were in line with the real classroom implementations. This research was designed as concurrent triangulation mixed method. The qualitative data were collected through participant observations implemented in two different second grade classes in Usak which were used to determine if the implementation principles of the curriculum matched with the real implementation in the classroom. As quantitative data collection instrument, an achievement test, which was conducted in order to determine if second grade curriculum aims can be realized for second grade students, was employed and data were obtained from 48 second grade students who were in the two observed classes. The data were collected in the spring semester of 2013-2014 education year. Frequencies were calculated in the analysis of observations. Quantitative data obtained from the achievement test were analyzed through mean (X) and standard deviation. It was concluded that the implementation principles of the second grade English language teaching curriculum were not in line with the real classroom applications. It was also found that enough importance was not attached to listening and speaking aims which were the core aims of the curriculum. Furthermore, it was determined that one of the teachers hardly used the target language and both teachers mostly conducted the lessons in Turkish. Within this context, it can be recommended that teachers need to be provided with quality in-service training opportunities related to the implementation principles of the second grade curriculum.
