Ilizarov principles of deformity correction

Abstract: Ilizarov frames provide a versatile fixation system for the management of bony deformities, fractures and their complications. The frames give stability, soft tissue preservation, adjustability and functionality allowing bone to realise its full osteogenic potential. It is important that we have a clear and concise understanding of the Ilizarov principles of deformity correction to best make use of this fixation system. In this review article, the history of Ilizarov frame, the basic sciences behind it, the me… Show more

“…As an entirely modular system, good clinical outcomes rely on an appropriate understanding of how best to apply the frame components, tailored to each patient, to produce a construct which will sufficiently control the mechanical environment at the fracture or osteotomy site to allow bone healing [27,29]. Developments on the original Ilizarov method of fine-wire fixation have introduced elements, such as threaded half-pins, which allow more versatility in frame application and with reduced muscle transfixion.…”

“…This combination is thought to generate an osteogenic mechanical environment [8,10,11,17,36], and the biomechanical theory has been supported by clinical results [12,33].…”

“…Ilizarov's method is a well-established technique often practiced in orthopedic surgery for bone reconstruction [15] . The importance of this study is that it highlights the most common complications for this procedure in order to reverse them and have a better clinical outcome.…”
