Ileoileal intussusception in children: ultrasonographic differentiation from ileocolic intussusception

Abstract: Introduction:The treatment of ileoileal intussusception in children differs from that of ileocolic intussusception. The purpose of this study was to identify ultrasonographic differences between ileoileal intussusception and ileocolic intussusception.

“…The sonographic diagnosis of small bowel intussusception is similar to that of primary ileocolic intussusception, both of which manifest as a target shape in the abdomen. The diameter of the ileoileal mass is comparatively smaller than that noted in ileocolic intussusception [9][10][11][12]. Of the 6 patients reported herein, 5 underwent an abdominal ultrasound examination, and the intussuscepted mass (typical or atypical signs of a target) was detected in all.…”

“…Small bowel intussusception "doughnuts" appear more often in the paraumbilical and left quadrants, differentiating them from the typical right quadrant location of ileocolic intussusceptions. 6,14 There are conflicting reports in the literature as to the surgical predictive value of the transverse diameter and the outer thickCase Challenge ness of the external ring in SBI images. In a small study by Zhang et al, 15 outer ring thickness greater than 0.4 cm was predictive of need for surgical reduction; however no such relationship was found in similar studies.…”

“…Diagnosis of most SBIs relies on ultrasound scanning, and types of intussusceptions can be readily distinguished [5,6,10]. In addition, with the development and wide application of ultrasound technology, the presence of temporary or transient small bowel intussusceptions has become clinically apparent [1,4,5,8,11].…”
