IL6, IL8, and IL10 in the distinction of malignant ovarian neoplasms and endometriomas

Abstract: Endometriosis is a benign disease of the female genital tract that is characterized by the presence of ectopic endometrial tissue, and may diffusely manifest in pelvic implants and localizedly, as in ovarian endometrioma. It is a chronic disease and difficult to diagnose. 1 Ovarian endometriomas are cystic masses with chocolate-like content, 2 found in 17%-44% of patients diagnosed with endometriosis. 3 Although endometriosis is considered a benign condition due to its normal histology, molecular data strongly… Show more

“…Browne et al ( 30 ) detected significantly elevated levels of CXCL8 in each histological subtype of ovarian cancer, and demonstrated the existence of a relationship between CXCL8 chemokine levels and the clinical stage of ovarian cancer. Analogous results were obtained by Crispim et al ( 31 ); significantly elevated serum levels of CXCL8 were detected in women diagnosed with ovarian malignancy and benign tumors compared with those detected in a group of women without reproductive system conditions. In addition, the authors revealed that the prognosis of patients with ovarian cancer was worse when higher levels of the chemokine persisted during the course of the disease.…”

“…Many biomarkers have been studied first in cancer and then in endometriosis. Some cytokines show increased levels in both pathologies [5]. They are studied in order to identify non-invasive biomarkers.…”

“…It has been demonstrated that significantly elevated levels of IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10 are exhibited in cancers. But the cut-off values for these cytokines in serum were 5.3 pg/mL (IL-6), 56.2 pg/mL (IL-8), and 12.56 pg/mL (IL-10) [5].…”
