The design of a virtual reality (VR) cultural application is aimed at supporting the steps of the learning process-like concrete experimentation, reflection and abstraction—which are generally difficult to induce when looking at ruins and artifacts that bring back to the past. With the use of virtual technologies (e.g., holographic surfaces, head-mounted displays, motion—cation sensors) those steps are surely supported thanks to the immersiveness and natural interaction granted by such devices. VR can indeed help to symbolically recreate the context of life of cultural objects, presenting them in their original place of belonging, while they were used for example, increasing awareness and understanding of history. The ArkaeVision VR application takes advantages of storytelling and user experience design to tell the story of artifacts and sites of an important cultural heritage site of Italy, Paestum, creating a dramaturgy around them and relying upon historical and artistic content revised by experts. Visitors will virtually travel into the temple dedicated to Hera II of Paestum, in the first half of the fifth century BC, wearing an immersive viewer–HTC Vive; here, they will interact with the priestess Ariadne, a digital actor, who will guide them on a virtual tour presenting the beliefs, the values and habits of an ancient population of the Magna Graecia city. In the immersive VR application, the memory is indeed influenced by the visitors’ ability to proceed with the exploratory activity. Two evaluation sessions were planned and conducted to understand the effectiveness of the immersive experience, usability of the virtual device and the learnability of the digital storytelling. Results revealed that certainly the realism of the virtual reconstructions, the atmosphere and the “sense of the past” that pervades the whole VR cultural experience, characterize the positive feedback of visitors, their emotional engagement and their interest to proceed with the exploration.

The past decades have witnessed ongoing debates on the roles Greek sanctuaries exerted on the formation and development of the polis and the Greek communities in general. Sanctuary placement policies-an issue that is also related to the motivations and interests backing the location of the cult to a given deity-are also themes that have drawn the attention of several scholars. Thus we picked a group of sanctuaries dedicated to Hera (called Heraia/ sing. Heraion), so as to analise them as contextualised and embedded in their respective communities to which they belonged, within a period that goes from the VIII century up to the V century. The Heraia in question were located in Samos, Corynth (Perachora), Argos, Metaponto, Croton, Poseidonia and Selinonte. In order to carry out this research, we focused on the functions of Hera´s sanctuaries as well as on the the actuation spheres of this goddess as far as the polis are concerned. Likewise, we payed due regard for the spatial aspects of the Heraia. Finally, we proceeded to a comparison according to some criteria we selected. We made use of a broad range of documentation, especially archaeological sources, also considering the contributions the ancient texts could make. The study of the sanctuaries of Hera we conducted enabled us to notice the multiplicity of functions and roles of sanctuaries across the Greek world. Therefore, our research contributed to the understanding of the cult of a Greek deity as a historical phenomenon embedded in social practices. Summary:This paper is aimed to analyze several different aspects of the cult of Hera in Magna Graecia -from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period -where the goddess was already worshipped since the foundation of most ancient colonies in southern Italy. By examination both of the ancient Greek sources and the archaeological evidences, we tried to outline the features and the duties of the goddess over time, also comparing all the detected data with the Greek world. The result will perhaps help in defining them better than has been done hitherto.Key words: Magna Graecia, cult of Hera, Heraion of Foce Sele (Poseidonia), Achaean colonies, marriage, childbirth, motherhood INTRODUCTION (C.M.M.)Taking part in the panel "Which Maternity for Hera/Juno? Myths and Cults between Greece, Magna Graecia and Rome", offered us the opportunity to reflect, although in preliminary fashion, on the aspect of Hera as patroness of women and her role in watching over the phases of transition to matrimony and procreation in the Greek world and in Magna Graecia through a discussion of the ancient Greek sources and archaeological evidence.In some of the main sanctuaries dedicated to the goddess in the Greek world (Perachora, Argos, Samos and Tiryns), the nature of the offerings, in particular the coroplastics, suggests these were cults centred on fertility, which Hera supervised as queen and patroness of the citizens. She assumed the function of the guardianship of matrimony, of which she is known as the "custodian of the keys", 1 and of all consequent 1 Aristoph. The statuettes of Hera and Zeus seated on a single throne 2 are a reference to the royal sacred conjugal union "mythical and ritual model of monogamous marriages".3 They are Hera Teleia and Zeus Teleios, "Masters of the House", 4 the couple that protected the marital union and which, through religious ceremonies sanctioning marriage, guaranteed the nuptial rites, with their consent sealing the union's validity in society. Indeed, for the Greeks matrimony was of the utmost importance, expressing attainment of maturity for both sexes, as defined in the religious context by Hera Teleia, providing the necessary foundation for the procreation of legitimate offspring and for the perpetuation of civil society.
