“…As regards other chronic bullous auto-immune diseases, high levels of IL-5 have been detected in BP blister fluid [23], correlated with both ECP levels and the number of blisters, as demonstrated by D’Auria et al [24]. On the other hand, this interleukin was detected in only half of the sera of 15 BP patients and at levels (median 6.8 pg/ml, range 1.6–112 pg/ml) significantly lower than those obtained from the blister fluid (median 326.5 pg/ml, range 76.2–665 pg/ml) [24].…”

These last findings seem to suggest that also in BP, as we hypothesize for DH, IL-5 exercises a prevalently local influence on eosinophil activation, since the relationship between its serum levels and the disease severity is not significant.…”

“…Additionally, in many patients, the number of eosinophils in the peripheral blood is elevated [108]. It is noteworthy that high levels of IL-5, eotaxin, and eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP) have recently been detected in blister fluid of BP patients [109,110]. IL-5 promotes growth and activation of eosinophils.…”

“…IL-5, the thymus and activation regulated chemokine (TARC), and eosinophil cationic protein levels. IL-5 and eosinophil cationic protein levels in blister fluid of BP patients were reported to correlate with total serum IgE levels, [65] and TARC levels in both sera and blister fluid were elevated in BP sera, and serum TARC levels correlated with total serum IgE levels. [66,67] These data in combination with the significantly higher serum levels of IL-4 and sCD30 [68] point toward a strong T-helpercell type 2 (Th2) response in BP.…”
